Prices & costs

For Europeans, a trip to the Canary Islands means no currency exchange. The islands are part of Spain and exist within the Euro. Though the islands have always been fairly reasonable, Spain’s dicey economic situation has impacted island prices, which are quite cheaper than other European island destinations.

Food and Drink

While much of mainland Spain has dropped the customary late midday meal and siesta, the tradition continues on Gran Canaria. If you can readjust your eating schedule, try to eat the big midday meal as this is when you’ll find the best deals.

Though the touristy restaurants lining the boardwalks will have some discounts, tuck into the local restaurants on the side streets. They often have midday meals that include two courses, bread, a glass of wine/beer, a dessert and possibly a liquor (likely ron miel) for 6 to 12 Euros.

Depending on the restaurant, expect to spend 12 to 30 Euros for an evening meal, 1 to 4 Euros for a pint of beer or a small glass of wine. To get cheaper beverages, avoid touristy restaurants lining the beach and stay away from exotic, multi-liquored drinks. That being said, order at least one mojito. Island mojitos are delicious and cost 4 to 6 Euros.

Grocery Stores

If you have kitchen capabilities, stock up on food at the grocery store. Fruits and vegetables such as cherries, avocados and tomatoes are cheap and unbelievably good. Bread and goat cheese are made locally, are cost effective and great to have on hand for a midday snack.

Grocery stores are the best place to get bottled water. A large bottle of water from a grocery store will cost a quarter of what it will cost on the beach.

Imported items such as beer and cheese will cost more money than they would at home but unless you’re looking for an extremely specialized item, you’ll be able to find whatever you need on Gran Canaria. Bring toiletries and sunscreen from home. As with most sunny tourist destinations, you’ll be paying up to twice as much for these goods if you wait to buy them on the island.
